History

Origin
History of Akerboom begins actually as shipyard Akerboom. As founder Jan Akerboom left an shipyard at Kaag Island and  starts his own company in Hillegom around 1920. He bought an existing yard, which is situated on the Leidsevaart. This yard consisted of a slipway with barn and a house. Later he modernized, by replacing the slipway with a new rail cart ramp. On this yard small barges were made, for the bulb transport through the canals.

On this yard, barges called 'bollenvletten' where constructed to ship the bulbs in the canals.

Crisis
With these barges, bulbs where transported to and from the fields and bulb sheds. Carried loads where manure (cow) and flower heads to the waste pit. Working with these barges for decades belonged to the familiar images in the bulb business. The barges of Akerboom were well known but the demand decreased when the truck and tractor where introduced. Forced to change, Akerboom had to find a new way to make a living and enthusiastic pioneerd with ' other industrial products for growers and gardeners '. In the 1930s, the crisis period, this resulted in a 'revolutionary' warm water steriliser, for the treatment of flower bulbs, with for that time a powerful energy source: wood bundles or waste straw.

Second world war
Directly after the second world war, Akerboom introduced the warm water sterilisers with oil burners in the market. After the death of Jan Akerboom in 1942, the company was continued by his son Jan Akerboom, as a shipyard and construction company. Besides barges, development continued on mechanizing the flowerbulb business, where mainly water was involved. First water outside the machine (barges), later in the machines (warm water sterilisers).

Innovations

Drive-inn steriliser were developed for cold and hot water, they where implemented with revolving-, sliding- (to the middle) and/or hydraulically lifted doors. Heating changed from  the bottom of the steriliser to a seperate heating unit in the middle. Chemical dipping tanks for baskets, cold disinfecting tanks with tilt mechanism. In the 70's to 80's,  3 sons joined the business : Johan, Peter and Ron. They developed: a sorting- "cascade", export clean washing- and inline disinfecting machines. The export washer and disinfection machines were later developed into fully automatic washing, dipping and packing lines, which can recycle washing water. De-stack and stacking machines completed these lines.

The drive-in sterilizer are further developed to disinfection tank with hydraulic hoist and drying system, which operates fully automatic.

The first big expansion
Through the ongoing innovation in the agricultural industry, a new, larger, workshop was required.
That's why we decided to convert the ship yard into a machine-factory, at the Beeklaan/Leidsevaar

2002 - Our current location
In 2002, a larger premises in Noordwijkerhout, at the Gieterij, Number 54, was aqquired by Akerboom.
This building has a much wider floor-plan, increasing the usefull space of our workshop and ensuring that certain building fases don't interrupt other fases.
Last of all, this building is also more suited to be able to satisfy the ever increasing demand more larger and more complex machines.

2016 - The fourth generation

In 2016, Tom and Olaf Akerboom, both sons of Peter Akerboom joined the business. With the new generation joining, the future of the company is continued. The current development focusses on, reducing the use of pesticides for crop protection, without losing the effectiveness of the treatment.

By improving the capacity en quality of our machines, we can help our clients.
